Building an inclusive and supportive lab environment

I believe diverse views, identities, cultures, experiences are strengths of a successful and innovative team. I expect lab members to strive for this collective vision and treat every lab member with respect and dignity. A supportive lab environment provides a space for us to learn and grow together to become better scientists (and people). We all have different perspectives, strengths, learning strategies, and ultimate career and life goals. I am committed to supporting these unique needs, working with you to develop mutually beneficial plans, and advocating for you during your stay in this lab and your future endeavours.

Promoting equitable access to science and higher education

Everyone deserves the opportunity to do science. It is my personal goal to foster an environment that especially encourages historically under-represented minority groups to participate and achieve their potential. I aim to always be approachable and am open to addressing any concerns that may prevent anyone’s ability to pursue a career in science. In the event I am unable to directly help, I will help find other resources and introduce you to people that can offer additional advice to support your goals and career.

Encouraging physical and mental well-being

I believe success in (and outside of) science is rooted in physical and mental well-being. I strive to foster an environment where the team can openly discuss challenges and obstacles. My door is always open for the team to seek help and accommodations when needed. Our team regularly participates in the Penn Healthy You and Virgin Pulse Wellness Platform programs and activities.

Building the next generation of mentors and educators

I believe that scientists at every level have a commitment to teaching each other, the next generation, and the broader public. I hold high standards for myself and encourage lab members to also strive to be better mentors and educators in and outside the lab, openly transferring skills and knowledge and helping build a productive and friendly environment in which everyone can succeed. I encourage lab members to engage in public outreach efforts and think about ways we can empower communities with scientific knowledge to make better-informed decisions for themselves.

Being bold, challenging, and having fun

Scientific research is a long and arduous process. It is easy to get lost in small details, failed experiments, and the many challenges that are part and parcel of this journey. I encourage the lab to ask many questions, to be bold and challenge dogma, to always be curious about the natural world, and to consider innovative tools and perspectives as they approach their research questions. Collaborations and new ideas are always welcome. I want you to have fun and feel individually fulfilled as you embark on this journey and explore your scientific interests!

Our Team

The Amatullah Lab is composed of a diverse group of scientists and students. Our mission is to foster a supportive environment where members feel valued and empowered to contribute to the scientific community.
